RNs Across the Country Say 1199SEIU is the Right Choice

RNs have job security and respect with 1199SEIU

Standing together, 1199SEIU RNs have won:

  • Enforceable safe staffing rights, including critical pay for shifts below minimum staffing levels

  • Protections from unfair discipline and work assignments outside lawful scope of RN license

  • Higher wages, with guaranteed annual raises

  • Secure benefits, including healthcare and retirement protected from any changes without RNs’ input

  • A voice and enforceable rights on safe staffing

A proud history and mission

1199SEIU was founded by a group of pharmacists over 80 years ago, and today we represent healthcare workers throughout New York, including Long Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida, Massachusetts, and Washington D.C. We’re guided by a mission to achieve quality healthcare for all, and good, secure jobs for those who provide care. Because healthcare is highly regulated, 1199SEIU members are very active in local, state and federal government, standing up for our professions and our patients.

Making sure every voice is heard

1199SEIU is a democratic union. Members make all the important decisions, including electing their own coworkers as union leaders and voting on all contracts together.

RN members are elected by fellow RNs to our 1199SEIU RN Council to protect the priorities that are unique to the RN profession. The RNs have their own division and they make their own decisions with the full backing of the union. 1199SEIU nurses have a tremendous impact in improving care, winning better workplace conditions and making quality healthcare a priority in government. 1199SEIU nurses are in the position to win the highest standards because they are part of a larger body of healthcare workers who speak with one voice.

1199SEIU RN Nurse Council

“I have been an 1199SEIU RN for 33 years now. My colleagues and I have supported each other and kept our employer fair through our union. We meet with management to address issues like staffing and safety directly. Our union is always there when something happens on the job, like discipline or our contract not being followed. There is strength in our union beyond our workplace, too. 1199SEIU RNs across New York got together and helped pass legislation mandating safe staffing ratios, so we have adequate time to care for our patients.”
